I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction as well as to anyone interested in this period of history. However, I found Nicky Diss tolerably easy on the ear and preferable to many other female narrators. Eventbrite - Southwark Cathedral presents Elizabeth of York, the Last White Rose - A Talk by Alison Weir - Thursday, 18 August 2022 at Southwark Cathedral. I generally prefer to listen to a male narrator as I find the deeper voice tone more relaxing and easy on the ear. The narrator Nicky Diss reads at a suitable pace. Alison Weir has talent in keeping the reader’s interest and retaining correct historical detail. It’s such a pleasure to find historical fiction written by talented serious historians. I found this book easy to listen to and enjoyed picking up the little snippets of history along the way. I love how Alison Weir has envisaged an engrossing story around this Queen and how she has used her imagination, writing skills and expert historical knowledge to create a most enjoyable story blended with lots of little historical details. Flame-haired, beautiful, and sweet-natured, she is adored by her family yet her life is suddenly disrupted when her beloved father dies in the prime of life. No silly bodice ripping just great writing and good historical detail and plausible imaginative character development. Elizabeth of York is the oldest daughter of King Edward IV. Great piece of writing by Alison Weir, who is a serious historian as well as, in my opinion, a talented writer of “fiction”.
